Do short-haired pets need to be brushed regularly too?
Yes, short-haired cats and dogs should be brushed regularly too. Brushing is good for their skin and reduces shedding.
How do I know when it’s time to cut my pet’s nails?
You know it’s time to cut your dog’s nails when you hear them clicking on the floor. Of course, every animal is different, and how fast their nails wear down depends on how much physical activity they do. Nails also tend to wear down less quickly during the winter, when our four-legged friends spend less time outdoors. Your pet’s nails should be trimmed at least once a month, but could require trims every week or two.
Is it true that the ice salt used on sidewalks during winter is toxic for animals?
Yes, unfortunately. Your pet can get sick from licking ice salt off their paws. Ingesting ice salt can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also irritate the pads of the paws and the spaces between their toes. You should make sure to take the time to clean your pet’s paws after they go outside, or have them wear small protective boots.
What are hot spots and how can I prevent them?
Hot spots develop when there’s too much moisture on an animal’s coat, such as after bathing or grooming. Because the skin can’t breathe properly, it becomes infected and may require medical attention. That’s why it’s important to make sure your pet’s fur is completely dry, especially if it’s very long or very thick. You might also consider shaving your dog or cat and using a waterproof collar.
