At Hôpital Vétérinaire du Plateau, we offer a comprehensive weight management program for pets. We know that excess weight can have a considerable impact on your pet’s quality of life and life expectancy, so we want to support our clients as best we can. Research shows that pets who are overweight are at risk for developing diabetes, arthritis, heart issues, hypertension and other health problems.
What is a healthy weight for my pet?
A healthy weight for your pet depends on a number of different factors, including breed, size, age, and overall health. Your veterinarian will analyze these factors to determine your pet’s ideal weight and advise you on whether they should gain or lose weight. An animal is considered overweight when they weigh 15% more than their ideal weight.
Every time your dog or cat visits us, the veterinarian will weigh them and analyze the data and any fluctuations based on previous numbers.
How can I help my pet lose weight?
Diet plays a big role in weight loss. Your veterinarian will help you determine the best kind of food for your pet, the right portions, how to observe your pets eating habits and how to limit treats and table scraps.
Exercise is also an important part of weight management. We’ll devise an exercise, training and games plan to encourage your pet to be more active.
We’ll also schedule regular follow-up visits to ensure the plan is working.
