Spaying and neutering cats and dogs are some of the most common surgical procedures we perform at our animal hospital. For more information about spaying and neutering, the procedure’s benefits and whether it’s time to have your pet fixed, please contact us.
There are many reasons why you should get your dog or cat spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering greatly reduces the chance of reproductive health problems like cancer and infection. It also helps control animal populations by reducing births and thereby lowering the number of stray dogs and cats. Neutered male dogs and cats are less likely to run away or mark their territory. Spaying and neutering also prolongs life expectancy by an average of two years.
The procedure is different for male and female animals because their reproductive organs are different. Neutering males entails castration, i.e., removing their testicles. In females, we perform an ovariohysterectomy (OVH), i.e., a complete removal of the ovaries and uterus. Both operations are performed under general anaesthetic and are followed by a short post-surgery stay at our veterinary hospital.
While the procedure is often done at a young age, research shows that the ideal age depends on your pet’s size and breed. This way, surgery will interfere less with your pet’s overall growth. If you want to have your pet spayed or neutered, your veterinarian will help you decide the best time.
The recovery period lasts between 7 and 14 days. Your pet will need to rest and avoid licking the wound. If necessary, we will remove stitches a few days after surgery. Contact us right away if your pet’s condition seems at all unusual or worrying.
